2026 Hailed as the Age of the Frog Game.
While I found the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Considering a collection of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Amphibians have been not at all new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. Yet, their prevalence has noticeably surged in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are serious Frog Games.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To understand this trend, I performed a thorough analysis into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The findings paint a clear picture: a consistent uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's growing prominence in the public consciousness is also apparent elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the explosion in gaming looks particularly powerful.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
Frankly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs possess inherent design advantages for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues facilitate a host of innovative control schemes.
Several the announced projects directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance
So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year so far.
If these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be witnessing a true amphibian entertainment revival.
