A minimum of 64 Killed in Rio de Janeiro's Most Extensive Police Raid on Gangs
A minimum of 64 civilians died in a law enforcement action against the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's history.
Four police officers were among those killed during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, local authorities stated. More than 80 people were detained.
Violent conflicts erupted when around 2,500 police forces entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization reacted using gunfire, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, officials said.
The UN Human Rights Office said it was "appalled" by the security action, urging "prompt and effective investigations".
Mission Consequences
The slum neighborhoods adjacent to the city's international airport is seen as the central command of a major organised crime groups.
State officials stated no less than 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Numerous individuals were injured, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
Local Reaction
Locals have compared the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the operation began.
Access ways continue shut throughout the region.
Organized Crime Spread
The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their control throughout the region, growing illegal substance trade paths and dominance over the slum communities.
Rio's police reported more than 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the operation, together with multiple guns.
Mission Context
The combined action by civil and military police comes after a year-long investigation.
Dozens of the suspects are believed to be participants in an organization from the Pará state who are at the moment taking refuge in Rio de Janeiro.
