Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
