British Expands Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Alert List with An additional 11 Nations
The UK government has included eleven further destinations to its travel alert roster regarding the threats of methanol toxicity from tainted alcoholic drinks.
The revised advisory features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "a worldwide rise in the frequency of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol poisoning.
Just last month, officials had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, after a number of notable events such as the fatal demise of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being advised that even minimal doses of methanol can lead to permanent eye damage or death within 12–48 hours.
Exactly what is Methanol and How is it Employed?
Industrial alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol typically used in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. It is not intended for ingestion.
Although it is inherently formed during the creation of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms lower it to low, safe levels for drinking through the purification method.
Yet in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to cut costs, and as it is tasteless and odourless, it is very difficult to detect.
Authorities' Advice for Travelers
Authorities minister Hamish Falconer said that each tourist should be aware of the symptoms of industrial alcohol toxicity.
"If you're consuming alcohol overseas, stick to trusted places and steer clear of local brews or complimentary drinks," the minister warned.
"If something seems unusual, for example a hangover that's far more intense than typical or vision problems – contact a doctor right away."
The entire roster of destinations identified as presenting a danger of methanol toxicity currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
