California is Fully Drought-Free for the First Time in a Quarter Century.
Following 25 long years, no portion of California is facing drought conditions. This milestone arrives after grueling years marked by a lack of precipitation that worsened blaze threats and strained its massive agricultural sector.
A Map Shows No Drought
The latest assessment from the federal monitoring program showed that California in its entirety is without dry or drought conditions. This change came after weeks of significant storms that topped up key lakes like Oroville and Shasta far beyond their long-term norms.
“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” noted a weather expert.
From Intense Storms to Soggy Celebrations
The journey here involved intense and deadly winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, resulting in extensive inundation, power outages, and tragic losses. Although that weather helped ease the drought, they did not eliminate it.
Until late December, pockets like northeastern California were considered unusually parched. Heavy rains at the start of the new year washed away those last vestiges of dryness.
A Crucial Snowpack Remains a Concern
Yet, hydrologists note that the end of drought status should not be confused with complete water security. Recent measurements of the mountain snow accumulation show it at only about 70% of the typical level.
This frozen reservoir, which provides a significant portion of the state's usable water as it runs off, is an essential component for future water availability. Hydrology managers stress that it is not yet time to determine the outlook for the annual water supply.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” commented a hydrology section chief. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to increase by April 1st so that we’re closer to average.”
Although the monitor is entirely green, attention turns to sustaining this precious water balance during the months to come.
