Controversial American-supported GHF Aid Organization Terminates Aid Operations

The disputed, US and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) declares it is terminating its aid operations in the Palestinian territory, following nearly half a year.

The group had already suspended its several relief locations in Gaza after the halt in hostilities between Palestinian factions and Israel was implemented six weeks ago.

The organization attempted to circumvent United Nations channels as the primary provider of aid to Gaza's population.

UN and other aid agencies declined to participate with its approach, saying it was improper and dangerous.

Many residents were killed while attempting to obtain sustenance amid turbulent circumstances near the foundation's locations, mostly by Israeli fire, according to the UN.

Israeli authorities stated its soldiers fired alerting fire.

Program Termination

The organization declared on Monday that it was terminating work now because of the "effective conclusion of its crisis response", with a cumulative three million shipments containing the corresponding to over 187 million food portions provided to residents.

The foundation's chief officer, the foundation leader, also said the American-directed Civil-Military Coordination Center - which has been created to help implement the United States' Palestinian peace proposal - would be "implementing and enlarging the approach the organization demonstrated".

"The foundation's approach, in which militant groups were prevented from misappropriating relief supplies, played a huge role in getting Hamas to the table and securing a halt in hostilities."

Comments and Positions

The militant group - which disputes allegations of misappropriation - supported the shutdown of the GHF, according to reports.

A representative of said the organization should be held accountable for the harm it caused to Gazans.

"We urge all international human rights organisations to ensure that it does not escape accountability after resulting in fatalities and harm of thousands of Gazans and concealing the starvation policy practised by the Israeli government."

Organization Timeline

The organization commenced activities in Gaza on 26 May, a short period subsequent to Israel had partially eased a total blockade on humanitarian and trade shipments to Gaza that persisted for nearly three months and caused severe shortages of essential supplies.

Subsequently, a famine was declared in the Gaza metropolitan area.

The organization's sustenance provision locations in southern and central Gaza were managed by United States-based protection companies and situated within regions under Israeli military authority.

Aid Organization Objections

The UN and its partners claimed the system violated the core assistance standards of non-partisanship, even-handedness and self-determination, and that directing needy individuals into armed forces regions was intrinsically hazardous.

United Nations human rights division stated it documented the killing of at least 859 Palestinians attempting to obtain nourishment in the vicinity of GHF sites between late May through end of July.

A further 514 persons were killed near the courses followed by international humanitarian deliveries, it also mentioned.

Most of them were lost their lives due to the Israeli military, as per the organization's documentation.

Divergent Narratives

Israeli defense forces stated its troops had fired warning shots at persons who advanced toward them in a "intimidating" fashion.

The foundation stated there were no shootings at the aid sites and accused the UN of using "false and misleading" figures from the Palestinian health authority administered by Hamas.

Future Implications

The GHF's future had been indefinite since Hamas and Israel agreed a truce agreement to execute the first phase of the United States' reconciliation proposal.

It said humanitarian assistance would take place "free from intervention from the both sides through the UN organizations and their partners, and the international relief society, in addition to other international institutions not associated in any manner" with Palestinian factions and Israeli authorities.

UN spokesperson the UN spokesman said on Monday that the GHF's shutdown would have "zero effect" on its operations "because we never worked with them".

He also said that while additional assistance was reaching the Palestinian territory since the truce was implemented on October 10th, it was "inadequate to satisfy all requirements" of the 2.1 million population.
