Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is leaving the governing body at OpenAI, just days after a series of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.
He remarked in a release that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have contributed, enthusiastic about the prospects of the enterprise, and eagerly await observing their development".
The prominent academic, who formerly led the prestigious university, stated on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.
Email Communications
The newly public emails demonstrated that the economist corresponded with the financier until the eve of his 2019 arrest for suspected sex trafficking of young people.
In a separate statement, the technology organization said it understood the economist's choice to step down.
"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the perspective he brought to the directors," OpenAI stated.
Political Context
This development arrives after both chambers of the legislative branch decided on recently to approve a measure that would require the federal prosecutors to make public its documents on Epstein.
The legislation will subsequently head to the office of President Trump for endorsement. The President has stated he plans to sign the bill, after changing his view on the subject following pressure from his followers.
Correspondence Findings
A group of Epstein-related messages released by the House Oversight Committee days ago referenced multiple well-known personalities in the billionaire's past associates, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The communications revealed that the economist and Epstein dined together frequently, with the billionaire often trying to introduce Summers to influential international personalities.
Personal Response
After the emails were released with the public, Summers said he accepted "complete accountability for my ill-advised choice to persist in interacting with Mr Epstein".
He added that he desired "to restore trust and fix connections with the persons closest to me".
Previous Positions
The economist served in high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; serving as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as director of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He led the institution from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a academic there. When declaring his departure from public commitments recently on Monday, he said he would persist with his teaching commitments.
Further Repercussions
Following Summers' announcement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a left-leaning policy institute in the capital where the professor was a senior fellow, announced that he was ceased to be connected with the organization.
Summers became part of the board of OpenAI, which develops the AI chatbot, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its chief executive the company leader.
