Ruben Amorim Insists He Won't Step Down from United but Acknowledges Dismissal Awaits If Performances Don't Improve

The Manchester United manager has made it clear that he will will not step down from his position in spite of the club's current difficulties, though he concedes that he could face the sack should performances fail to improve.

Current Struggles & League Standing

Amorim has collected just thirty-four points in his 33 top-flight matches, and Manchester United now placed in 14th place in the standings following a 15th-place result last season. The Red Devils have managed only two victories from the first seven fixtures of the season, including an early League Cup exit at Grimsby as well as last weekend's defeat to Brentford FC. That outcome prolonged Amorim's quest for his first consecutive league wins since arriving nearly a year ago.

This Saturday, Sunderland FC will visit the Theatre of Dreams, where a further loss could increase scrutiny facing Amorim.

The Manager's Position on Resignation

When asked about if he would think about quitting, Amorim responded: “Absolutely not, that's the call of the board. I cannot do that. Sometimes I get those thoughts because defeat hurts, failing to build positive momentum. It’s deeply disappointing after you create the momentum, heading into the next game, things go wrong. That feeling sometimes hurts me deeply. Also the players and above all the coaching team at the club. But it isn't my decision and I think it would be really hard to leave unless I don’t do everything to pursue my path at United.”

“It’s an honor to manage here and I want to stay at the club and I'm determined to fight for this. But the problem now that causes me suffer is losing matches, not the fear of losing my job. You fear losing your job if you have to cover expenses and I don’t have that feeling.”

Explaining His Formation Tactics

Amorim also offered an impassioned defense of his three-at-the-back system, that has been the focus of much scrutiny. The coach has used this setup consistently yet it has so far failed to deliver steady results desired.

“No one here is naive,” he commented. “We understand that we need results to continue our plans. We'll reach a point that is impossible for all involved since this is a very big institution with a lot of sponsors, under dual ownership. So it’s hard, managing expectations is really hard. My aim is for the side – in victory or losing – performing the same way but we're not doing so.”

Amorim noted that the team had played in different systems with past coaches, also to no avail. “We must to play with consistency, with the same power, with the same energy, with the required concentration. Should we achieve that, the system won't matter which setup we use.”

Arrangements Regarding Winter Exhibition Matches

Amorim confirmed plans to arrange lucrative mid-season friendlies in order to boost funds lost by not qualifying for European competition. “We must do it and we knew it when we miss Europe,” he said. “We owe it to the supporters and our budget and we aim to connect with our fans globally.”

Memorial to Synagogue Incident

United will hold a minute’s silence on Saturday with the squad will wear black armbands as a mark of respect following the tragic incident at a synagogue earlier this week. Local rivals City will do likewise for their league and Women’s Super League fixtures over the coming days.
