Space Traveler Discloses Depression Following Wave of Backlash After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The fully automated spacecraft departed Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of space.

The group of women also featured accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
