The World is Encouraged to Join as the Fourth Haim Sisters Sister.
"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the Haim sisters?" an inquiry arrives. "My request was to ask if I can join as their extra sister."
However, there remains a key snag: I also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're far from alone. A host of high-profile supporters have publicly coveted the honor.
It's clear a special quality is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy hopefuls.
In the tradition of the best groups, they're a tight-knit trio. Their visuals often feature them marching in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such boundless exuberance you can't help but think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."
"The numerous instances on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the biggest honour. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to make music."
"Therefore all is invited to be the honorary part of the family."
Historic Milestone
The band are connecting from home, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.
They're presently celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in the running for the prize.
"I tune into the announcements every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"
The weight of the accolade is deeply felt by the sisters.
"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major step," says Alana. "But we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."
Heartbreak and Laughter
The record emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that unique liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on.
The words follow endings and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they want to be.
"I love way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to make an effort in shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."
Development of Sound
That developed confidence called for a different sonic direction – more unpolished and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.
For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the percussion.
"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.
"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."
Stories and Shared Laughter
The band's honesty fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their dating horror stories.
One man broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.
"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."
An Assured Future
One can easily sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their standing in the industry.
They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an international fan base.
Yet the band will consistently be their number one priority.
"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was four," shares Alana. "There is no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
