What We Know About Jihad al-Shamie, the Manchester Synagogue Attacker

For those living nearby, Jihad al-Shamie gave the impression of having a relatively normal daily routine: a man with a newborn who lifted weights and parked his car inconsiderately near the home he lived with his mother and father.

Born to a trauma surgeon, Shamie seemed to have a happy childhood, with brothers coming after him who later pursued notable jobs in technology and pharmacology.

But since he was shot dead after carrying out a deadly antisemitic attack, a more complete understanding has come to light. Authorities discovered that Shamie was previously declared insolvency, found guilty of minor offenses and an alleged rapist when he attacked worshippers marking Yom Kippur.

Conventional Upbringing

Jihad al-Shamie had what appeared to be a conventional upbringing in Manchester throughout that decade. In home videos recorded to send to his elder relative overseas, he pets a kitten in the family garden, informing his parent he wishes to give it food; in different footage he helps his sibling on a playground equipment in the yard.

Shamie grew up with two younger brothers, the relatives going on trips to Camelot theme park, wildlife attraction and the retail destination, and the children participated in educational Christmas performances at Christmas.

Where they once lived, near the healthcare institution where Shamie’s dad had his occupation, those living nearby mentioned a “normal little boy” who was part of a “nice family””.

He would interact positively with peers on the road, and the single odd behavior a neighbor mentioned was that he passed much of his time playing on a handheld computer game – so much that it caused excessive blinking.

“They appeared normal, the father worked over the road, he appeared pleasant enough, frequently engaged in conversation. They seemed like decent people, the mom often talked with neighbors. The boy would play games, his gaming sessions lasted hours, he used to blink a lot.”

‘A Regular Young Man’

Neighbors on Shamie’s quiet suburban street in Prestwich characterized him as a “uncomplicated, average person” who would frequently work out in his outdoor space, practicing strength training, with one complaining he frequently positioned his vehicle poorly outside her house.

The relatives apparently transferred to the connected property, about two miles from the site of the violence, about 15 years ago, when Shamie was nearing twenty years old. While the brothers were growing up, the relatives made their home in the neighboring district.

Child of a Medical Specialist

His dad, Faraj al-Shamie, worked globally as a trauma surgeon, practicing in dangerous regions across the globe, including in Iraq, Afghanistan and South Sudan. He had employment with non-profits, such as the Red Cross international branch, and studied under renowned surgeon David Nott in the Iraqi city of Mosul.

Relative's Declaration

Faraj al-Shamie has distanced the family from his child's violent actions, posting a declaration online that stated: “Information coming from the Manchester area regarding the terrorist attack directed against a Hebrew temple has been a extremely troubling for our household.

“The Al-Shamie family locally and overseas explicitly rejects this heinous act, which was aimed at harmless, non-combatant individuals. We completely separate ourselves from this attack and convey our profound dismay and grief regarding these events. We extend our sympathy to those affected and their relatives, and we pray for their strength and comfort.”

Private Situation

Shamie had earlier served as an educator, instructing in language and coding. Yet, records showed him jobless in state bankruptcy files which showed he turned to a debt relief order the previous September while residing with his parents. Just one month later, his father posted a picture of him with a recently born child, describing the photo “Excellent Addition to the Family”.

History of Offenses

Authorities disclosed that Shamie was on police bail for rape when he operated his compact dark vehicle into worshippers at Heaton Park shul. It is not known when the alleged sex attack happened but it is thought to have happened within the current year. He was under active investigation by local law enforcement.

He had encountered problems earlier, according to sources, who said he had a criminal record for additional minor violations. He was however not tracked by counter-terror police or protection organizations prior to the attack.

Extremist Development

In the hours since the attack, investigators have been pulling apart every strand of Shamie’s life to comprehend what factors led him on the road to extremism. That includes examining phone records, verifying contacts and acquaintances, and analyzing his online activity.

He seemed to have been obsessed on the challenges affecting Muslim populations in parts of the Middle East, especially lately regarding Gaza. An X account, believed to belong to Shamie has a machinegun as its profile picture, alongside a white flower, and possibly religious scripture.

One entry on the dormant X account references the bombing of Manbij in Syria in 2016, and calls on God to “stand up against those who wronged and killed them.”
