Woman Knifed in Birmingham Bus Stop Attack Succumbs to Injuries
The female victim who was stabbed to her neck area during a random assault near a bus shelter within Birmingham has died, authorities verified.
The deceased woman, who was 34, came under attack on Smallbrook Queensway street, right beside the Bullring shopping centre, just prior to 9 PM GMT on Friday, West Midlands Police said.
Djeison Rafael, twenty-one, was presented at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Monday, charged over the attack.
He was previously accused with attempted murder but following the victim's passing the charge has been updated to murder.
Police Response
The force said officers would be around the city centre on Monday providing public assurance, while detectives assisted the victim's relatives.
Detectives are appealing any eyewitnesses who might have observed Mr Rafael, identified as British citizen of Black ethnicity, reportedly dressed in an all-grey tracksuit, dark headwear, athletic shoes with a backpack.
Incident Location
The stabbing happened outside the Bullring shopping centre, across from primary access point of New Street railway station.
Law enforcement confirmed they classified it as a random violent act with investigators stating they were working to understand why it happened.
Witness Accounts
An area worker, who works nearby, recounted the emergency response after completing her shift around 10 PM on Friday.
She described the scene as "quite chaotic", and said co-workers reported hearing a commotion at about 21:00.
"Many co-workers use transit services, take the tram... our security is compromised essentially, here in the city centre."
Ashley Birks, twenty-five, resident of Stoke, said he came to Birmingham quite frequently visiting his partner resident there, expressing concern about what had happened.
"It causes concern about my partner," he said.
"She doesn't drive and works at major concert locations... considering a totally random act [happened], you know, it's horrible."
